Environmental policy

Woodthing is a company offering top-class wooden products. Our goal is to combine good design with noble material that is obtained in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.

More wood in use means less CO2 in the atmosphere.

Wood is a natural storehouse of CO2 recovered from the air. The longer we use items made of wood, the longer the CO2 stored in them is not released into the atmosphere. Woodthing is looking for projects made of wood that will be useful and aesthetic. We believe that these properties of our products will allow CO2 to be trapped for as long as possible in a form that does not accelerate global warming. And the more such products we have in our everyday lives, the less CO2 there is in the atmosphere of our planet.

Woodthing strives to make the manufacturing process of wooden products as environmentally neutral as possible. For this purpose, we set ourselves several requirements:

I. Our products are made only from renewable, naturally and sustainably obtained FSC-certified wood.

II. We take care to minimize emissions and energy related to production by optimizing the production process, including through maximum use of raw materials and the related reduction of waste.

III. We use local suppliers to minimize environmental costs related to transportation.

IV. To impregnate the wood, we use 100% natural oil - primarily tung oil produced from tung tree seeds.

V. We use packaging made of recycled (paper) and further recycled (cardboard) or biodegradable (wood wool) materials.

Our environmental policy is regularly verified and adapted to new solutions whenever possible.

Certified wood

Woodthing only uses wood that has a certificate confirming its origin. We do not agree to deforestation in Europe, we only cut wood from accredited forests, thus making room for new trees.

We use FSC-certified wood. The certificate number of the batch of wood from which a given product was made can be found in the Product Card attached to each purchase.

The FSC certificate awarded to controlled wood means that the wood:

  • has not been obtained illegally or in a way that is detrimental to the interests of local community
  • does not come from naturally and socially valuable areas (e.g. Amazon forests)
  • was not obtained from genetically modified trees

A forest that receives accreditation must meet certain conditions included in 10 categories that allow assessing whether it is managed in a sustainable manner. This means that in the forest we obtain wood from:

  • there are both young and old trees
  • new trees are planted in place of the cut down trees
  • flora and fauna are protected
  • dead trees decompose naturally

The Mexican organization Forest Stewardship Council, operating under the short name FSC, was established in 1993. Its activities were initially devoted to the protection of tropical forests. Over time, it evolved towards popularizing the sustainable forest management method it promoted, and ultimately focused on forest management certification around the world.

Natural Tung Oil

Tung oil is obtained by pressing the seeds from the nut of the tung tree (Vernicia fordii). The 100% tung oil we use is a natural and non-toxic wood care agent. Safe for health. Thanks to three-time oiling, a waterproof, strong and long-lasting protective layer is created on the wood surface, leaving a hard protective film with flexible properties. Suitable for contact with food.

CO2 absorption

  • 1 kg of wood consists of 0,5 kg of water and 0,5 kg of dry wood
  • 0,5 kg of dry wood consists of 0.237 kg of carbon (C)
  • trees get C from CO2 in the air (about 0,04% of air is CO2)
  • 1 kg of wood = ca. 0,87 kg CO2 absorbed from air

Carbon storage of a tree depends on its species, as their mass varies. The carbon storage capacity of an oak tree varies depending on its size. However, on average, an mature oak tree can sequester around 11 to 22 kg of carbon per year, and can store around 272 to 363 kg of carbon in its wood and leaves. Additionally, an oak tree can store carbon in its roots.
